Wandering Aengus Treks
Hadrian's Wall - Self Guided

A Roman Coast to Coast from the mouth of the Tyne to the Solway Firth, this classic walk follows the course of the greatest relic from the Roman occupation of Britain which lasted 400 years. Varied scenery and constant interest from forts, milecastles and the Wall itself, make for a world class long distance path right across Northern England.

This 84 mile National Trail takes you along the riverside route in Tyneside, through the farmland of Tynedale, and up onto the spectacular escarpment of the Whin Sill. Crossing into Cumbria, a gradual descent to a pastoral landscape brings you to the Roman city of Carlisle, and the trail ends on the salt marsh of the Solway Estuary. Along the way you will pass the sites or remains of the 16 wall forts, milecastles and turrets, as well as several original and partly restored sections of the Wall itself.

We recommend doing this walk over 7 days (8 nights) an average of 12 miles per day. If you have any doubts about your ability we would be happy to chat to you and arrange an itinerary that is best suited to you.

Getting to the Start :

There are frequent trains to Newcastle from London Kings Cross (3 hours) and from Manchester (2½ hours). From here you can take the Metro to Wallsend (20 minutes). We do not recommend arriving by car as parking is expensive and the return transfer long.

To get to Chollerford for the Central section walk, take a train to Hexham from London (4 hours) or Manchester (3½ hours) then bus (20 minutes) to Chollerford. Car parking and return transfers are available at extra cost.

Returning from the end of the Hadrian's Wall path

From Bowness-on-Solway there are regular buses to Carlisle (30 minutes) and frequent trains from there to London (4 hours), Manchester (2 hours) and Glasgow (2 hours). If departing from Brampton there are regular buses to Carlisle (20 minutes).
