The ‘Edge of Empire' tour is unique to Wandering Aengus Treks. This is no ordinary tour but a magical series of walks through some of the finest landscapes of Northern England, tracing the ancient relics and continuing influences of the greatest empire the world has ever known including the world heritage site of Hadrian's Wall.
We begin in York, one of England's oldest established cities. Following in the footsteps of the Sixth Legion we then cross the North Yorkshire moors to beautiful Robin Hood's Bay and from here we walk the most spectacular section of the Cleveland Way National footpath along the coast to Whitby.
Heading north we come to the most significant Roman relic in Britain, Hadrian's Wall. We spend three days walking the best preserved central section of Hadrian's Wall along the Great Whin Sill escarpment across the Pennine hills, the spine of England, to reach Carlisle, another far-flung city of ancient Rome. Here we make a visit to its much-besieged Castle which has been host to several famous prisoners including Mary Queen of Scots. Beyond Carlisle we enter the most sublime corner of all England, driving across the rugged hills of the Lake District to reach the charmingly picturesque town of Ambleside at its heart. From our hotel base in Ambleside we have three days of hiking in this most spectacular corner of England, and we complete this historical odyssey in the well-preserved walled city of Chester which boasts the largest Roman amphitheatre in the Britain. |
